The typical financial advisor spends more than two hours behind the scenes for every hour spent in front of a client. What's surprising is that the highest earning advisors don't allocate their time all that differently. The gap between them and everyone else comes down to roughly four hours a week, which works out to around two hundred additional client meetings a year, and close to double the income.
That finding comes from Kitces Research, which has been studying what advisors actually do since 2018 and set out its most complete view on productivity in September 2022. Read closely, the research points to seven factors that account for the difference. One of them works in precisely the opposite direction to what most advisors assume, and it tends to divide a room.
